Idiopathic epilepsy is a diagnosis of exclusion, meaning we have to rule out the structural causes (tumors, inflammation, vascular events) before settling on it.
  • Balance issues. Head tilt, facial droop, stumbling, or vestibular signs can come from inner ear disease, central neurological disease, or both. MRI distinguishes between them.
  • Paralysis or weakness. Sudden or progressive difficulty walking, dragging a limb, or weakness in the hind end that isn't explained by orthopedic findings.

Spinal and Back Conditions

  • Intervertebral disc disease. IVDD is one of the most common reasons for spinal MRI. What Does the MRI Referral Process Look Like?

When the workup points toward MRI, the process is more straightforward than families usually expect. Here is what generally happens:

  • We discuss the recommendation with you. This includes what we're hoping the MRI will show, what it would mean for treatment, and what the cost and logistics look like.
  • We coordinate the referral. We send your dog's records, prior imaging, bloodwork, and a referral letter directly to the imaging facility. You don't have to be the courier.
  • The imaging facility schedules and performs the MRI. They contact you to set up the appointment and walk you through what to expect on the day of the procedure. Some facilities also have a board-certified radiologist or neurologist who reviews the images and may consult on findings.
  • Results come back to us. Once the MRI is complete and the images have been read, the report comes back to our clinic. We sit down with you, walk through what was found, and put together the next steps.
